Mount Meru Overview
Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain and the fifth highest peak in Africa, rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) above sea level. Located inside Arusha National Park, just 70 km west of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich trekking experiences in East Africa.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, the Mount Meru climb begins in the heart of a protected national park, where trekkers often encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and baboons along the trail. Because of this wildlife presence, all climbers are accompanied by an armed park ranger during the first day of the trek.
Mount Meru was formed by volcanic activity in the East African Rift Valley, and about 250,000 years ago a massive volcanic eruption collapsed the eastern side of the mountain, creating the dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater visible today.
Although Mount Meru is often overshadowed by nearby Kilimanjaro, it is considered by many climbers to be one of the most beautiful mountains in Tanzania, offering spectacular views of the crater, ash cone, and the towering summit of Kilimanjaro.
The 4-day Mount Meru trekking itinerary provides an excellent balance between challenge and adventure, making it ideal for both experienced hikers and climbers preparing for Kilimanjaro acclimatization.
