Kilimanjaro Routes: Pros and Cons
Mount Kilimanjaro offers several climbing routes, each providing a unique trekking experience. The routes differ in duration, difficulty, scenery, success rate, and level of traffic, allowing climbers to choose the route that best fits their fitness level, experience, and adventure goals.
At Kilisky Adventures, our experienced mountain team helps climbers choose the most suitable route for their Kilimanjaro trekking expedition. With many successful summits and years of guiding experience on Africa’s highest mountain, we carefully consider your fitness level, time available, and acclimatization needs before recommending the best route.
Some of the most popular Kilimanjaro climbing routes include the Machame Route, Marangu Route, and Lemosho Route, each offering incredible scenery and a rewarding summit experience.
Machame Route – The Popular Scenic Route
The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular Kilimanjaro climbing routes due to its beautiful scenery and high summit success rate.
This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwestern side, passing through several ecological zones including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and glacial summit landscapes. Trekkers enjoy spectacular views as the route circles around the mountain, especially when crossing the famous Shira Plateau.
The Machame Route follows a “climb high, sleep low” profile, which helps climbers acclimatize better to the altitude.
The trek normally takes 6 or 7 days, although the 7-day itinerary is recommended because it significantly improves summit success.

Marangu Route – The Classic Kilimanjaro Route
The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also the only route that provides hut accommodation instead of camping.
This route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeastern side and follows the same path for both ascent and descent. The trail passes through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert zones before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).
The Marangu Route is usually completed in 5 or 6 days, although the 6-day itinerary is recommended for better acclimatization.
Pros
• Comfortable hut accommodation instead of tents
• Considered the easiest route in terms of trail gradient
• Shorter itinerary compared to other routes
Cons
• Lower summit success rate due to shorter acclimatization time
• The same route is used for both ascent and descent
• Less scenic compared to other Kilimanjaro routes
Lemosho Route – The Most Scenic Route
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the best and most scenic routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins on the western side of the mountain, offering a remote and less crowded start.
Trekkers pass through dense rainforest, the Shira Plateau, and the dramatic Barranco Valley, with stunning views throughout the journey. The route later joins the Machame Route before the summit attempt.
The Lemosho Route typically takes 7 or 8 days, giving climbers excellent acclimatization and one of the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro.
Pros
• One of the most beautiful and diverse Kilimanjaro routes
• High summit success rate due to longer acclimatization
• Less crowded during the first few days
Cons
• Slightly more expensive due to longer duration
• Requires camping
